A while ago, I wrote this Q&D Bingo app in response to a request I received.

A Quick Little Bingo Program ...

Reader Robert Taubert pointed out that I did something of a non-standard Bingo card. Which was true. As I told Robert, I hadn't actually played a game of Bingo since I was in short pants. The problem was that I numbered all of the columns from 1 to 15 when the set of columns together should have gone from 1 to 75. Being fundamentally as lazy as a slug, I left the correction of the program as an exercise for readers.

The Quick Tip on DataSet in the previous blog was written mainly to support this article about LINQ to DataSet. LINQ to DataSet feels a lot more like "ADO.NET Reloaded" than a part of LINQ. It's really just a whole layer of objects that help you use this most central part of ADO.NET more effectively.

The LINQ series, now being filled out at About Visual Basic, has been expanded to include a new article about LINQ to SQL. (Click Here to go straight to the new article.) One of the things mentioned is the scare that went through the developer community, about a year after LINQ to SQL was announced, that it would be summarily dropped again in favor of a different way of accessing databases from an application, the Entity Framework.

LINQ - Language INtegrated Query - is probably the most successful innovation in .NET since ... well ... since .NET. There have been lots of others ... MVC, Entity Frameworks, WPF. But they just haven't hit a home run like LINQ has. There's an old saying that success has many fathers but failure is an orphan. LINQ has lots of "homes" these days. It's being included in more and more data technologies. So this week, I'm starting a new series about LINQ.

I love programming!

You can apply it to all kinds of personal situations. For example, I have all of my liquor cataloged in a SQL Server Database, along with drink recipes and places for reviews. My wife was working a newspaper puzzle and wanted all of the words that could be formed from eight letters. A simple combination calculating program gave it to her.

A few years ago, a reader asked how to delete just the top line of text in a RichTextBox. He was using ASCII style code that tested for the vbCrLf characters that have been used since teletype days. RTF, the formatting used by RichTextBox, isn't like that and the article shows what it is like.
